In her introduction Stranger writes that “It is not possible to be English and to remain unaware that in country places the Hunt plays an enormous part in village life”. This certainly would not be true today, now that fox hunting in its traditional form has been banned by Parliament, and was probably not true even when the book was written in 1965. Most urban Britons, and even rural ones in some parts of the country, would have had little knowledge of, or interest in, the sport. I doubt if the inhabitants of the Kent village where I lived as a child spent much time discussing fox hunting, or would have had any idea that in the lives of the hill-farming communities of Cumbria (and certain other districts) hunting had a similar importance to that which, say, football had in their own. |
